Top 3 Ways to Have an Eco-Friendly Picnic this Summer

Summer is here – finally! It's time to head outside into the great outdoors to soak up that summer sunshine and create memories that can last a lifetime. Play, eat, laugh, walk, rest, and enjoy this time-honored ritual of love.

As a child growing up in Tehran our whole family would head to the gardens on the outskirts of the city for daylong picnics. My first memories of those magical days are making makeshift swings with a rope suspended from the trees and purposely waiting for the watermelon to cool down in the river stream. Keep scrolling for tips on how to plan a picnic that’s both fun and sustainable!

1. Shop Locally

Head to the local bakery for a freshly baked baguette and insert a filling of your choice and buy loose fruits and vegetables to prepare your own crudités. It might be less convenient than plastic-packaged carrot sticks, but will make your picnic all the more charming and rustic - and will cut down on waste too.

2. Reusable Supplies

Paper and plastic products are typically a staple for picnics because of their convenience, but that will hopefully be a thing of the past sooner than later. Reusable straws, cups, plates, utensils, and storage containers are somewhat obvious, but going a step further by replacing napkins with washcloths would be the cherry on top of your sustainable sundae.

3. Leave It Better Than You Found It

For starters, your picnic basket should also contain a trash bag for any waste that’s bound to accumulate. The temptation, especially in any little ones that might be there, to share some food with wildlife does more harm than good. Leaving the better area than you find it also means doing any final sweeps of the picnic area before you’re on your way home.
